University of Leeds

A BREEAM Excellent rated building representing the largest single investment in the University of Leeds’ history. Bringing together two key science faculties into a single building and what a building it is.

A sympathetic restoration and repurposing of the existing Grade II listed Old Mining Building which now forms an integral part of the new facility. The result, a glorious blend of history and forward-thinking architecture that sits in harmony with the landscape forming a stunning addition to the University campus.

From the beginning, the plan was to create a modern inclusive learning environment accessible to all. Clever, human centred design has enabled fluid movement between spaces, spaces that support different learning styles enabling students to approach their work and learning outcomes in a different way. The innovative use of space offers opportunities for relaxed collaboration and spontaneous encounter.

Southern Broadstock worked closely with the university team to not only design and plan the environment but to source furniture that would complement the built space, have a quality finish, and deliver an eclectic design aesthetic that worked on multiple levels. Furniture that would bring people together to learn, rest and refuel.

We were delighted they could see the potential for heightened creative collaboration, social engagement and connection offered by our soft seating, booths, and team tables.
